Prospective Site

Site Description: Whidbey Island
The area of our current search are the islands near Seattle, Washington. One exemplar of such a location is Whidbey Island, situated approximately one hour northwest of Seattle in Puget Sound. Whidbey Island is a place of great natural beauty and peacefulness, with many spectacular views of the surrounding waters--Admiralty Inlet, Saratoga Passage, Holmes Harbor, Useless Bay, Mutiny Bay, to name a few. This is a large island, accessed on the south end by ferry and on the north end by car. It is primarily an island of villages and residences. It retains the feel of a rural, coastal island while being within commuting distance of both Seattle and Vancouver. Whidbey Island also has a few retreat and artist centers already established, such as the Zen Center of Shodo Harada Roshi and Hedgebrook, an artist's colony for women writers. The Nalandabodhi "Mahasiddhi Project Committee" is continuing its investigation into suitable properties in the Northwest

Environmental Awareness
The residents of Whidbey Island wish to preserve and protect the forests and natural beauty of the island, which has been impacted by increases in population, development and logging. They would welcome a new neighbor whose purpose was not to exploit the land through commercial development but to live in harmonious relationship with the environment and local communities.

It is our intention to bring those qualities naturally developed through meditation practice into our planning and design for the Center: mindfulness and awareness, gentleness and precision, appreciation and respect for our world. Accordingly, the preservation and protection of the natural beauty and health of the environment will be firm guidelines for the development of the Center.
